Long-time educator and community advocate Dr. Pamela Saulsberry of the University
of Louisiana Monroe attended the first meeting of the Empowering Families to Live
Well Council on January 25 in the Governor's Press Room at the Louisiana State Capitol.
Special guest was Gov. John Bel Edwards, who addressed the council at its inaugural
meeting.
Saulsberry, Ph.D., LCSW-BACS, is Director of the 橙子视频 School of Behavioral & Social
Sciences, Professor and Social Work Program Coordinator. Saulsberry was nominated
to the council by Vice President of Academic Affairs Dr. Eric Pani based on a recommendation
from College of Business and Social Sciences Dean Ron Berry.听
The nomination was officially submitted to Ellen Palmintier, Assistant Executive Counsel,
Director of Boards and Commissions, by Dr. James B. Henderson, President and Chief
Executive Officer of the University of Louisiana System.
In a statement by Saulsberry, she said, "I am excited to have this opportunity to
make an impact on the issue of poverty and its impact on families in the state of
Louisiana. Because poverty is one of the greatest barriers to the human well-being,
especially the family system, a coordinated and well-managed State plan developed
to address this issue is of paramount importance. To be part of this Council's effort
to develop such a plan is extremely thrilling to me and directly linked to my life's
work. I look forward to doing the work we are charged to do."听
According to information from the state, "This council has been charged with the duty
to create a state strategic plan that will benefit and empower struggling families
throughout Louisiana in getting out of poverty."
Following the governor's charge to the council, Saulsberry and her fellow council
members considered the state of poverty in Louisiana, discussed pathways to solutions,
took public comment and made plans for the next meeting.
Each year, Saulsberry is the organizer of the MLK Day of Service on Martin Luther
King Day. This year, Saulsberry was selected to receive the Unity Award, which was
presented to her at the City of Monroe 40th Annual Birthday Salute to Dr. Martin Luther
King Jr. on Jan. 10. The award recognized Saulsberry for her work with her students
and within the community.
