Preparing for Research
In order to perform any type of research on human subjects, there are certain requirements.
An Institutional Review Board (IRB) must review your study for approval PRIOR to any
data collection beginning. See the 橙子视频 Institutional Review Board requirements. Researchers must also perform the required training for IRB approval
(link for CITI training on the IRB site).
If the research study involves grant funding, see also college and university grant

Data Collection and Analysis Technology Options
There are several software options for performing data collection and analysis. The
companies may have a free option or the college/school/program you are in may already
have a subscription. Check around before buying. The university has purchased SPSS
licenses, but you must request a license from IT (there is a limited supply).

CHS Research Symposium
The Grants & Research Committee hosts a poster symposium for CHS faculty and students
to present posters of their current scholarly activities. The event usually occurs
in the Spring semester with a call for abstracts to all CHS faculty in January. Contact
the Grants & Research Committee Chair for more information. Also, see the Poster Preparations
section below to create your poster presentation for the next symposium.

Poster Presentations
How to Create a Poster in Powerpoint
Slide size - Begin by making your slide the appropriate ratio/dimensions. To change the slide
size, click on the design tab and then slide size. Dimensions are only available up
to 56 inches. Therefore, to create a slide that will print to a 36鈥� by 48鈥� board,
you can use those exact dimensions. To create a larger print, use a ratio of that
size (i.e. 36x48 can be reduced to 9x12).
Trifold sections - If you鈥檙e planning to use a trifold board, click the view tab and turn on the ruler
checkbox. This will allow you to see the measurements of the board and plan your elements
accordingly.
General Information
Posters should stimulate discussion, not give a long presentation. Therefore, keep
text to a minimum, emphasize graphics, and make sure every item included in your poster
is necessary.
听听听听听听听听听听听 听Utilize handouts to supplement your poster.
听听听听听听听听听听听 听Goal: 20% text, 40% graphics, 40% space.
听听听听听听听听听听听 听Make sure ideas flow logically from one section to the next.
听听听听听听听听听听听 听Use charts and graphs to illustrate data (avoid large tables of raw data).
听听听听听听听听听听听 听Use high resolution photographs (web images often will not work).
听听听听听听听听听听听 听Do not use all capital letters.
- The use of typewritten, handwritten or a printed PowerPointTM presentation as a poster
is unacceptable.
- Be consistent.
听听听听听听听听听听听 听Keep consistent margins.
听听听听听听听听听听听 听Keep line spacing consistent.
听听听听听听听听听听听 听Keep the color, style, and thickness of borders the same.
听听听听听听听听听听听 听Keep shading consistent.
- Pick no more than 2鈥�3 fonts
- Pick no more than 2鈥�3 colors
- Test readability
听听听听听听听听听听听 听Title banner should be legible from 20 feet away.
听听听听听听听听听听听 听Body text should legible from 6 feet away
Getting Ready for Printing
Printers will generally accept PDF files or image files such as jpeg. To make your
powerpoint slide into one of these files, click save as and change the file type to
your desired type.
Poster Printing
The college/department/program may have funds available for faculty presentation posters.
This will need to be requested prior to printing.

Publication Tips
Before even writing your publication, be sure that you discover which journal you
intend to publish in. For this, consider 1)your intended audience, 2)journal aims
& scope, 3)reputability of the journal, and 4)publication fees, if applicable. Choose
the journal that best fits all of these criteria for your purposes. Journal websites
should outline specific sections and formatting that must be used for its publications.
Tailor your draft to strictly fit these guidelines. Also, be sure that you know the
journal鈥檚 citation/referencing style. See for help.

Grant Submission Process
In order to apply for external grant funding, there are certain procedures in place
within the College of Health Sciences and within 橙子视频 that must be performed prior
to ANY grant application submission. As a part of the CHS, we must follow the as well as OSPR鈥檚 Grant Submission Process.
Items to Consider Adding in Your Grant Budget
- Staff/Personnel - this can be either to work on the grant or for a time release for the researcher(s),
it could also include someone to perform a complicated data analysis
- Equipment/Supplies - purchase or rental
- Overhead costs - organizational insurance, membership fees, compliance fees
- Marketing/Advertising
- Training/Education for Researchers
- Travel Costs - transportation, meals, hotel, etc.; can also include dissemination at conferences
after a study completion

Endowment Information
If you need additional funds for projects related to scholarship, teaching, and/or
service missions, a professorship may be able to help.
What is an endowed chair?
The endowed chair is a distinction awarded by the university to a scholar or teacher
in recognition of past and potential original contributions to the individual's academic
discipline. In addition to the academic honor given to the individual, an endowed
chair provides funding for support of his or her teaching, research, and service responsibilities.
What is an endowed professorship?
An endowed professorship supplies state funding to institutions of higher education
to match with private donations and create endowments that will supply awarded faculty
with monetary resources to aid them in enhancing the quality of higher education and
promoting economic development in Louisiana.
How do I apply for an endowed professorship or chair?
During the spring semester before the fiscal year in which the new award will start,
a list of the criteria for the professorship, along with a description of the process
and required application materials, will be sent to all faculty who are eligible to
apply. After the deadline for receiving applications has passed, a review and evaluation
of applications will take place according to the process set for it.

Interprofessional Education at 橙子视频
Interprofessional Education or IPE is currently a relevant topic especially in the
Health Sciences. 橙子视频 has developed a robust program that is embedded in many of the
programs within the College of Health Sciences. Data is being collected by faculty
